developing social relationships

Two children sharing a secret, a girl with long curly hair whispering into a boy's ear, both smiling and engaging in a playful moment.

At About You OT, we support children to build social confidence in ways that honour their unique communication style, interests, and sensory needs. We don’t teach children to “fit in”—we help them feel empowered to connect in ways that feel safe, meaningful, and true to who they are.

What We Focus On

Social development can look different for every child. Our approach is flexible and child-led, supporting areas such as:

  • Building confidence in social settings

  • Understanding social cues in a way that makes sense to them

  • Navigating play, friendship, and group interactions

  • Expressing needs, emotions, and boundaries

  • Developing perspective-taking with compassion

We use play-based therapy, interest-driven activities, and real-world scenarios to help children explore and practise social interactions in safe, supported ways.

Our Neuroaffirming Approach

We value neurodiversity and recognise that there is no one “right” way to socialise. We avoid rigid social scripts and instead help children develop authentic connection, self-advocacy, and self-awareness.
